Andres Cabas, born October 7, 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia, is a Latin Grammy nominated musician who dug deep into his country's rhythms and created a fusion which started a whole new sound soon imitated by musicians from Colombia and far beyond.
He was born with music in his blood.
His father Eduardo Cabas is a well known musician and composer in Colombia.
His formal music education on the piano and percussion started at the age of 5. As a young adult Cabas traveled extensively, first to Paris and later to New York where - shy or not - he met and played with prominent jazz and salsa musicians.
His first self-titled album, ‘Cabas' (EMI) was released in Colombia in 2000 and was an immediate sensation, in particular the chart topping single, "Mi Bombón" ("My Candy") which topped the country's charts for three consecutive months earning him Gold and double Platinum discs before spreading to the rest of Latin-America and Mexico.
Two further singles from the album topped the charts; ‘Ana Maria' and ‘Tu Boca'. In March 2002, ‘Cabas' was released in the United States, where it received a warm reception from critics as well as, glowing reviews in Billboard Magazine and the New York Times.
He made the New York Times ‘Best Of' list at the end of 2003. Cabas was nominated for his first Latin Grammy - for Best New Artist- in 2002 and became notorious by walking to the awards instead of taking a limousine to the Grammy presentation.
The kudos kept coming.
He was nominated for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Interpretation at the MTV Latin Awards, and for the People's Prize and Best Rock Video at the Premios Lo Nuestro Awards. He toured the United States for the first time in late 2002 and has performed with Lenny Kravitz in Mexico and Shakira and Miguel Bosé in Spain.
Later collaborations include recordings and performances with Carlos Santana, Café Tacuba, Buika, Dave Matthews, Juan Luis Guerra and many others. In September 2003, his second album ‘Contacto' (‘Contact' - EMI) recorded in London, consolidated his success.
Contacto mixed percussion and drums with bass and rock beats, and the first single "La Caderona" (‘The Big-hipped Woman') had similar success to "Mi Bombón", reaching number 1 in Colombia, Argentina and Venezuela amongst other countries.
The single "Bolita de Trapo" (‘Little Rag Ball') also hit #1 in Ecuador.
And in 2003 Cabas toured parts of Europe for the first time. ‘Puro Cabas' (‘Pure Cabas', September 2005 - EMI) was recorded at the El Cielo Recording Studios in Monterrey, Mexico with famous Colombian songwriter/producer Kike Santander, musician Sargento García, and producers Toy Hernandez and Sacha Triujeque.
The first single of the album, "La Cadena de Oro" (‘the Gold Chain') written with Kike Santander was a major hit in Latin America, as was the music video which stayed in MTV's top ten for weeks.
‘La Cadena de Oro' was followed by a second single from the album, "Increíble" (‘Incredible'), along with performances at various Latin American music festivals. In 2006 Cabas was commissioned - together with his father Eduardo - by the Swiss-based ZERI Foundation to compose a series of 37 children's songs in different music styles, each designed to bring a positive message to children.
The title song was "Yo Quiero Vivir en Un Mundo Mejor" (‘I Want To Live in a Better World') and the songs accompanied 36 fables written by Gunter Pauli.
A DVD with all 37 songs and the 36 fables in English and Spanish was released in April 2007. In 2008 Cabas' son Simon was born (remarkably 8 August 2008) - a life changing event.
Later that year, his song ‘Bonita' from the album ‘Amores Dificiles' (‘Difficult Loves', June 2008 - EMI) was nominated for Record of the Year at the Latin Grammys.
The song was #1 for 35 weeks (!) in Colombia and hit #1 in Ecuador, Venezuela and Argentina. "Amores Dificiles" was followed in December 2011 by ‘Si Te Dijera' (‘If I Told You' - EMI), his 5th album, with collaborations with Andres Calamaro, Vicentico, Mala Rodriguez and Ale Sergi, of the Argentine group Miranda.
The album was released outside of Colombia as ‘Somos Dos' (‘We Are Two' - WEA International). His last album for EMI was the greatest hits package ‘Increible Pero Cierto - Grandes Exitos' (Incredible But True - Biggest Hits') , a retrospective of the first 10-years of his career. In June 2013 Cabas released the single and music video ‘Que Prenda La Mota' (‘The Engine Starts'), which quickly became a top 10 hit in Colombia.
He was also featured on a duet with up and coming singer Duina del Mar, ‘Besarte La Boquita' (‘Kissing Your Little Mouth' - Universal Music Latino). Cabas moved to Miami in December 2012, where he - in his words - lives alone with his piano.
His music has been featured in commercials around the world and his videos have collectively amassed in excess of 10 million hits on YouTube.
