Abbey Lincoln

Abbey Lincoln

Abbey Lincoln (born August 6 1930 as Anna Marie Wooldridge) vanguard jazz vocalist, songwriter and actress. Founding her own autonomy as an artist, she was engaged in the black power movement in the 60ies, artistically manifested in the great "We insist! Freedom now" album (1960) with her later husband and musical partner Max Roach and other musicians like Booker Little and Coleman Hawkins. Maybe the importance of the song "Love For Sale" for her is comparable to that of "Strange Fruit" for Billie Holiday: sovereign expression of a both political and artistic revolt.
