If punk really did die in 1977, Rancid didn't get the memo, or maybe their natural-born punk ethics told them not to care what others said. Either way Rancid is one of the 90s punk revival to release a platinum-selling album on an independent record label. Rancid was formed in Berkeley, California in 1991 by punk legends Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman. Both Armstrong and Freeman were veterans of the San Francisco East Bay's punk scene during the 80s, being members of some of the most important punk bands of the era, including the legendary, almost god-like, ska punk band Operation Ivy.
