Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode

Considered the quintessential techno-pop band of the 1980s, Depeche Mode evolved out of Britain's new romantic movement and was one of music's first acts to build a career completely around the use of synthesizers. Beginning with danceable pop tunes, Depeche Mode transformed its music into a dark and stark synthetic sound with moody and provocative lyrics that the present generation of techno musicians cite as a major influence. The band's roots go back to 1976 when keyboardists Vince Clarke and Andrew Fletcher formed the group No Romance in China in Basildon, England. By 1980, they had added guitarist/keyboardists Martin Gore and singer David Gahan to complete the lineup. Depeche Mode built a following on the London club circuit and issued the single "Dreaming of Me" in 1981. Their third single, "Just Can't Get Enough," became a Top Ten hit in the United Kingdom, while their debut album "Speak and Spell," was also successful. Just as Depeche Mode had begun to hit its stride, Clarke left the group and Gore took over songwriting duties, with themes becoming more ominous and sophisticated for 1983's "Construction Time Again". "Some Great Reward", issued in 1984, was their artistic and commercial breakthrough. The single "People are People" was a major hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Thanks to the alternative music boom of the 1990's, Depeche Mode became one of the world's most successful acts, particularly with 1990's "Violator," that produced three hit singles, including "Personal Jesus." Personnel changes, along with musical differences caused the band to take several hiatuses beginning in 1995 that included each member embarking on a solo career. In October 2005, Depeche Mode released "Playing the Angel," their 11th studio album that topped album charts in 18 countries, and then toured worldwide, playing to more than 2.5 million fans. The DVD release Touring the Angel: Live in Milan (2006) captured one of the band's greatest shows. "Sounds of the Universe, also made with the assistance of Hillier, arrived in early 2009 and debuted at number three in the U.S. The 2013 release of Delta Machine made for a trilogy of Hillier albums, while the album was mixed by longtime Depeche associate Flood.
