Originaire de Portland, capitale pluvieuse de l'Oregon, le groupe Hockey se forme autour de Benjamin Grubin (guitare et chant) et Brian White (guitare), deux musiciens renvoyés par le label Columbia en 2006.Ils recrutent Jeremy Reynolds (basse), Anthony Stassi (batterie) et Ryan Dolliver (piano) et s'essaient à un rock hybride à guitares et claviers rappelant Talking Heads et The Strokes.Funk léger et sautillantEn 2008, leur EP autoproduit Mind Chaos est remarqué par le DJ Zane Lowe. Hockey est signé sur Capitol et invité aux festivals Glastonbury et T in the Park à l'été 2009, sur la foi du single « Too Fake » sorti en mars 2009 et suivi de « Learn to Lose » en juin. Lancé en septembre, le single « Song Away » prépare le terrain à Mind Chaos, album au funk léger et sautillant.
