G-Unit is a hip hop group that was formed in 1999 in Queens, New York. G-Unit currently consists of rappers 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Young Buck, Tony Yayo and Kid Kid. The Game was also briefly a member of the group, but he was kicked out of G-Unit by 50 Cent. All of the founding members of G-Unit were longtime friends that wanted to collaborate together after having successful solo rap careers. G-Unit released their debut album, Beg for Mercy, in November 2003. The success of 50 Cent's debut solo album would help the sales of Beg for Mercy. Despite mixed reviews from the music critics, Beg for Mercy was still able to peak at number two on the US music charts. The album would also reach the music charts in seven other countries on its way to selling over three million copies worldwide. After taking time to focus on their solo careers, G-Unit would release their second album, T-O-S (Terminate on Sight), in July 2008. Despite the poor reviews and extended break, the album still managed to peak at number four on the US music charts. While opening sales of T-O-S (Terminate on Sight) were good, it would never come close to matching the sales numbers of Beg for Mercy. T-O-S (Terminate on Sight) has currently sold just under 300,000 copies in the United States. G-Unit disbanded shortly after the release of their second album, but they would come back together in 2014. G-Unit released an EP of previously unreleased songs called The Beauty of Independence in August of 2014. G-Unit won their only major music award at the 2004 Vibe Awards when they were named Best Group.
