Astrud Gilberto
Astrud Gilberto (b. March 29, 1940) is a Brazilian-born singer best known for her jazz style samba and bossa nova music. Astrud was born Astrud Winert from a Brazilian mother and a German father in the state of Bahia, in the north-east of Brazil. She grew up in Rio de Janeiro and moved to the USA in the early 1960's, where she still resides. In her mid-teens, she became part of (her own words) a "musical clan", and met João Gilberto, who she described as the clan's musical "guru". She married him a few months later, in 1959.
